The agreement on the project was signed by Sanjay Mathur, UNOPS Regional Director for Asia and Lee Dong Ku, the KOICA Resident Representative for Sri Lanka last week. The signing took place during a two-day official visit of the UNOPS Regional Director to the country. The Korea-Sri Lanka Friendship Hospital in Matara is an important symbol of this commitment from the Korean people, and we are excited to commence this new phase of work for the hospital.” The project will invest over 750 million rupees for the new construction and renovation work in the hospital. This investment will help to increase the bed strength of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB/GYN) and Neonatology departments of the Matara Hospital by 100, while also providing new staff facilities. The remodelling work will upgrade the existing facilities under the departments including the operating theatres, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), blood bank, pharmacy, Neonatal ICU (NICU) as well as the existing wards among others. This is aimed at allowing the hospital to provide a more modern and efficient service to the people of the District and in the Southern Province who rely on the hospital. Francoise Jacob, UNOPS Director and Representative for Sri Lanka commenting on the new project said that “UNOPS and KOICA have been working together since 2010 to support the Sri Lankan people and the government in various sectors. We are happy to be part of this important project with KOICA, where under SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, we are able support in improving health services for the Southern Province of the country.” The Korea-Sri Lanka Friendship Hospital was inaugurated in March 2013 and in partnership with the Ministry, KOICA has committed to initiate the next phase of the project which is to relocate the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB/GYN) and Neonatology departments from the Matara General Hospital to the Korea-Sri Lanka Friendship Hospital. As an implementation arm of the United Nations, UNOPS will provide technical, project management and oversight support in the implementation of the work.
